Floral Park, N.Y. – Andres Jimenez, M.D. announced he is looking to expand the successful Students of Medicine Program to schools and students on Long Island. Dr. Jimenez, a Floral Park resident, personally funds studentsofmedicine.com, an online program preparing high school students for a career in medicine.
"When I was in high school, I wasn't encouraged to seek medicine as a profession," said Dr. Jimenez. "I developed this program so students who lack support can learn about the profession by partaking in online courses, encouraging them to seek life as a physician, and enabling them with the tools to be successful in college and beyond."
Studentsofmedicne.com is in its seventh year, and has been working with the Bronx High School for Medical Science. The program consists of a 12 week online course, where students explore the wonders of medicine by partaking in clinical cases in their virtual emergency room, lectures by actual physicians, reading assignments, and one-on-one instructor guidance. In addition, the students at the High School for medical sciences will attain CPR certification through the course.
Under Dr. Jimenez' leadership, about 30 students each year complete the program and are more likely to pursue a career in medicine. This year, he hopes to expand this number through partnerships with high schools in Long Island. |
