Introduction Congratulations on getting into medical school, you have made a tremendous accomplishment, and are on your way to becoming a physician one day. For some going into primary care the preparation for residency may not be as tense as for those wishing to enter competitive specialties (again only because there are more primary care residency positions available every year versus those who apply, when compared with other competitive specialties like orthopedics). The preparation required for getting into residency positions like Neurosurgery or Orthopedics will overshadow that which was necessary to get you into medical school. Now some may think, “How can I possibly know what type of medicine I want to practice?”, and this is probably the best attitude to have when entering medical school. I mean, not until you actually rotate through the wards in your 3rd and 4th years can you actually get a slight and accurate picture about specific specialties. However, the best way to keep your options open for no matter what type of residency position is proper guidance and preparation from early on, and this is the purpose of this book. If you read my first book, “Getting into today’s highly competitive US medical schools”, you will know that the reason behind this series of books was that I was a very luck person. I had in my family, my father and two eldest brothers who are physicians, trained at some of the best institutions in the nation. They guided me from high school to college into medical school, and while in medical school they guided me to the residency position I wanted. In this book, I bring to you, the medical student, the tips of my father, brothers, colleagues, friends and myself to help guide you to get into today’s highly competitive US residency programs. And like I stated in my first book, “from this point on dedication is the key. Follow this book with strong dedication and it will show you the road to where you want to be”. Good luck. |
