| IMPORTANT TIP: For the US News Report's rankings listed above, keep in mind that the best measure of a school, besides how you personally fit there (taking into account social, and peer factors) is the school's match list. While on Interviews, ask to see the most recent match list, and see how many of the school's graduates get accepted into top programs for their respective specialties (click here to see rankings for most specialties). Some schools are stronger in some specialties versus other so keep that in mind. The school that places residents into top surgery spots may not be as helpful to you if you are going into psychiatry. Also, schools that do well in many specialties will provide you the broadest and best opportunity to make choices if at this point you don't know what type of medicine you will like to pursue in the future (it is perfectly normal to not know this early) | |

| Choosing Schools There are currently 125 accredited U.S. allopathic medical schools, and 16 accredited Canadian medical schools. Most run similar traditional curricula, while others have unique curricula. For example, Duke University School of Medicine completes all of its’ basic science courses in one year. Year two at Duke is spent doing research and some required clerkships. Location, cost, class size, curriculum, resources, are important factors to consider when choosing a medical school. You can expect to be up to your neck in work while in medical school, but it is very important to consider that you will still have a limited time for social enjoyment. In fact, the limited time off is even more precious, so make sure you will have opportunities for enjoyment upon need. There are many resources allowing you to discover these types of details in a medical school with their website being just one example. Website addresses for all U.S. Allopathic medical schools can be found at the end of the book. On most websites, you can request a brochure describing further details of relevance. Nothing, however, can replace the insight gained with an actual visit, and most wait until the day of the interview for such an evaluation. That is probably the best move because visiting a school twice after the interview for final consideration can be costly. Medical schools are very competitive; therefore, you want to apply to several schools, which YOU rank highly. Take notes during your interview, and rank your options. Make your choices after multiple acceptances. | |
