T hey often say that necessity is the mother of invention. The same holds true for The Step 1 Method. Created in 2005, “The Step 1 Method” filled the void for students who wanted a proven framework for how to study for the USMLE Step 1 Exam. Typically, 2nd year medical students have to depend on anecdotal advice from other students on how to prepare for “the Boards.” This anecdotal advice is often lacking in structure, credibility, and validity. Furthermore, virtually all of the Step 1 Exam preparatory materials are content based and do not deal with the strategy of preparation and learning. They do not teach you how to tailor your studying method to prepare for the demanding and unique USMLE Step 1 Exam. This lack of strategic preparation has led students to spend months studying for the Step 1 exam only to be dumbfounded when their score is far lower than they expected.

Due to a lack of information on the subject, the creators of The Step 1 Method surveyed a multitude of sources in test preparation, content-based study texts, resources, and review guides. The Step 1 Method was used by one US Medical school to go from an 85% pass rate to a 100% pass rate in only two years’ time Thus, the wealth of knowledge summated has culminated in The Step 1 Method, which was intended as a guide to help students get the most out of their valuable time, and to provide the right tools to help students get their highest score possible. With the utmost humility, we would like to think that The Step 1 Method is not simply “a way” to study for the Step 1 Exam, but rather it is “the way” to study for this test. The Step 1 Method walks you through how to prepare for the Step 1 Exam in a step-by-step fashion. By utilizing a learning module online course, the Step 1 Method uses the most effective educational techniques to ensure that you learn the necessary material.

In 2007, The Step 1 Method was used by one US Medical school to go from an 85% pass rate to a 100% pass rate in only two years’ time. The average score, 217, was two points higher than the historical national average. The significance of this statistic was that it had been previously asserted that USMLE Scores correlated w/ MCAT scores. The Step 1 Method walks you through how to prepare for the Step 1 Exam in a step-by-step fashion The average of MCAT scores of the students in those years were lower than the national average of Medical school matriculants. Despite this historical trend, the implementation of The Step 1 Method allowed these students to not only score higher than their peers on the Step 1 Exam, but to also shatter the national pass rate of 95%. Thus, The Step 1 Method has been able to undo decades of stifling pattern and lore that has prevented students from achieving their true potential.

With our consulting service begun in 2009-2010, the Step 1 Method is currently used by other US Medical Schools as their primary USMLE Step 1 Exam preparation program. We have been working with Medical School administrations to trouble shoot and determine what barriers to Step 1 Exam success exist in the current curriculum.
