Health Disparities Initiative

The goal of our program is to increase the number of doctors that come out of targeted areas with significant health care disparities (unequal quality of care). We not only focus on Urban areas with high percentages of racially underrepresented minorities, but also Rural areas that struggle with access to care from a lack of doctors to care for the sick, and who also serve as role models for the doctors to be. Being Urban, or rural born is a strong predictor of physicians who return back to these areas to practice medicine, and help those in need, and we want to make sure these premed students have the tools they need to fulfill their dreams one day.

In 2007 we launched our online premed program in an urban area of the Bronx (NY). It is unique since it combines medical education, and premedical guidance, both from actual doctors such as Dr. Jimenez. Of the millions of students that start college premed, only 17,000 get in each year (and at even lower rates with urban and rural born students). Many don't get in because they did not have the right guidance, or role models, and this course, along with other information on our website provides these resources to students anywhere in the country (or world). All premed students in the course would recommend the course to other students, as well as 100% of doctors surveyed who reviewed the course.

  Course Overview
Of the millions that start college premed, only 17,000 get into medical school each year. It is not that most of the kids aren't smart enough to reach such a respected, and financially rewarding profession; it is that they did not have the RIGHT TYPE OF GUIDANCE! Our program was created by Ivy league medical school graduates, premed students who actually "got in". That is what makes our program unique, in addition to teaching students about medicine with lectures by physicians, reading assignments and our very popular Virtual ER. Take a peak at the course syllabus (click here).

  Virtual ER
See for your self what is so unique about our Virtual ER (try a case). Students reinforce what they learn by diagnosing and treating talking patients, building confidence in their ability to actually become doctors one day.

  Guidance
Students will be assigned a trained premed mentor who will guide the student in creating their own Curriculum Vitae (C.V., an academic resume), and Personal Statement. These are important tools for the student's premed career. Student's also learn how to find, and apply for the many summer research programs around the country that will pay the students to perform research. Premed research, and especially in high school or first 2 years of college is a must to get into medical school these days.

Learn how to manage and prevent health problems
Another unique feature about our course is in addition to guidance from doctors, students learn how to manage common diseases, and prevent health problems from medical doctors. This is not only important so they get a head start on learning what interests them on becoming a doctor, but also a head start on what they will one day see in medical school, and just as importantly to help family members take better care of themselves.

  So much more!
There are so many other very important features to the program such as our lectures by physicians, the premed guidebook student's receive, the CPR and first aid training kit created by the American Heart Association TM

How will this course help my child get into medical school?
This course will provide students with the guidance they need to select the appropriate types of extracurricular for them to participate in during their premed college years. Many premed students lose time because they don't have the appropriate insight to select the extracurricular activities that are most valued by admissions committees. This course also adds to the premed student's extracurricular experience by actually teaching them about medicine. Students learn how to diagnose and treat common diseases, and learn about the different organ systems in the body. Students learn the foundations of what they will see in medical school one day, building their confidence, providing motivation, and ultimately an edge over their classmates!

What type of guidance is provided in the course?
Students are guided through creating a personal statement, and curriculum vitae (C.V., or an academic resume). These are two very important components of an application to medical school, and useful also for getting accepted to research program and other valuable extracurricular opportunities before medical school.

  What is the Virtual ER?
The virtual ER is our student's favorite part of the course. Students interact with animated patients which tell the student about their medical problems. Students must diagnose the patient's problem, and come up with ideas on how to care for the patient. Each case is based on real life clinical scenarios, and students build their confidence in applying what they learn to care for their patients.
